Congrats! They look real to me. I just bought 7 1/2 ozs. of Silver Pandas this week. They are previous years and are my first Silver Pandas.

Re: Authentic Panda?

Probably OK. I've got, or have seen, quite a number of fake Pandas. One thing they all have in common is that they weigh around 27 grams. It's also possible to tell from the soft plastic covering over the hard plastic shell, each of the 4 mints that make Pandas have a characteristic sealing pattern that I haven't seen on any of the fakes. There are lots of other differences, I wrote a multi page post last year, with pictures, on how to tell the difference.

If you are going to buy pandas make sure you do it from a RESPECTED SOURCE with a paper trail ...... the pandas have such a bad wrap that it almost NOT worth the head ache to pickup anymore unless you plan to keep them for life.

alot of folks are selling at STEEP discounts cause so many fakes are running around.

Once in hand, none of the fakes that I've seen are hard to tell. Look at the real and fake 2002 below, I won't bother telling you which is which. The counterfeiters spent a lot more time with the reverse since it is common to large numbers of years but there are a lot of giveaways there too but not as obvious as the face side.

Great shot T ........yeah even stevie wonder can see which one is the fake....I guess I just very sensative to the fact that one day I MAY have to defend my bullion as being authentic....

I know as the prices rises that is going to happen regardless .....I just wanna keep that day as far into the future as possbile.

Pandas are great coins as long as you are willing to do your homework.....and that should go for all your purchases

Thanks for the shots......it made everything alot easier to understand

I have a gold 2007 1 ouncer, but am horrible with pics. Maybe if I get home today I could take a decent one outside since we have a lot of snow here. I'll try.

Tom, I remember your write up on the pandas, might have to hunt it down to read about them again. Didn't you and someone(floridaracinggirl??) hacksaw through a few of the fakes?

That was me. The dark coloration in the copper was rust on the hacksaw blade rubbing off.

As strange as it may sound, your best line of defense in avoiding fake Pandas is to NEVER buy them from Chinese sellers, especially on eBay.

I just did a search for "panda" and there were like 3 good threads in a row by Tom. If I knew how to ling them, I would, but i'm pretty ignorant.

Re: Authentic Panda?

Mike. thanks for you effort.

The second PIC was good. It was standing upright and clear.

The first is slanted and blured at the very top.

Please can you re-take the first again and this time upright.

Manythakns.

These shitty panda coins are a big reason people stay away from PMs.

I just got a 1980s gold panda, can't remember the year. Mine doesn't come in a hard plastic capsule but it is in a soft sealed plastic case. Anyone with a gold panda know if they're supposed to come in hard plastic case? I will try to post a pic tonight.

Here are the pictures of my gold panda. I couldn't take it out because the soft plastic sleeve is sealed. I think it looks quite real, what do you think? Click on the pictures for full size.

Yes my friend, you needn't worry, your coin is genuine.

Re: Authentic Panda?

I haven't heard of any good fake gold pandas. The weight of gold makes it very hard to pull off. I did buy some fake 1/10th oz gold pandas about a year and a half ago. The weight and diameter were right but they were twice as thick as real (1.6 mm Vs 0.8 mm). The 1/10th oz coins are so small that it was hard to notice.

xinkid 02-29-2008 10:49 AM

Re: Authentic Panda?

Thanks for the assurance. :D

I read your other posts TomD, very thorough investigation. I think the lack of detail in the center of the stairs for the year 1987 is a good indicator that this is real. Also, the bamboo looks very sharp, hard to immitate.

Good to know that gold coins are hard to fake. It's a 1 ouncer. The weight is fine and the thickness is similar to my maples.
